UPDATE! Pasionfruit is going out of business. This post is no longer relevant.
Do you want to make money blogging?
Do you want to get more traffic to your blog?
Who wouldn’t, right?
Let’s talk about Passionfruit Ads today. This site can help you achieve both of those goals. (side note, this post isn’t sponsored by them, nor I am getting anything in return. Too bad, huh? I’m just sharing to help you out!) Let’s break it down a little:
What is Passinfruit Ads?
Passionfruit Ads is an ad platform that allows you to sell ad space on your blog without worrying about the technical side of things. You create an account through their site and then you can buy ad space, sell ad space, or swap ad space with other bloggers. When you sell ad space, you don’t have to worry about setting up invoices or check-outs, it is all done through the app. You also don’t have to worry about when the ads start or stop, Passionfruit takes care of that for you.
How can I make money blogging using Passionfruit Ads?
Passionfruit helps you sell ad space on your blog. You might be wondering, why would anyone want to buy ad space on my blog? The answer: because people see your blog on a daily basis. Even blogs with a small amount of traffic can sell ad space on their blog.
How can I get more traffic from my blog using Passionfruit Ads?
When you buy ad space on a blog, people reading that blog are going to see your ad. Hopefully, they’ll find it interesting and want to read it. They’ll click the ad and end up on your blog! You can also get traffic to your blog by swapping ad space with other bloggers. No cost to either of you!
Passionfruit Ad Survey
For the last month, I conducted a survey about Passionfruit Ads and want to share the results with you. I asked users the following questions:
What do you love about Passionfruit Ads?
What features do you use?
How much money did you make in August selling ads through Passionfruit?
How much traffic did you receive from ad space you bought in August?
Half way through the survey, I realized I should have asked more questions. Like: how long have you been blogging, how many page views do you get, how much money did you spend on ads, etc. Oh well, the answers are still very insightful. 43 people responded to my survey, and 39 of them were selling ad space on their blog (some only swap ad space). Let’s start with the most interesting question.
How much money did bloggers make in August selling ad space on their blog through Passionfruit ads?
Anywhere from $0 to $2,078 a month! Here’s a chart of the 39 bloggers that reported they are currently selling ad space:
9 people said they are not making any money yet selling ad space, but many of them admitted that they just barely started. Once people are aware of their ad space, I’m sure they see more numbers. The average income for the month of August was $173. If you don’t count those that made $0, the average is $230 a month. That is a great source of passive income! Some bloggers are making a good amount of money selling ad space. The top 5 make: $300, $700, $520, $1600, $2078. That would be nice.
How much traffic did bloggers get buying ad space through Passionfruit ads?
Answers were all over the board here, so it is kind of hard to report. But, people are getting traffic from ads they buy! Of the people who reported they received between 9 referrals to 3000 referrals during August. One blogger reported, “A lot of the blogs I have sponsored are in my top 10 referrals from last month.” That is awesome! Buying ad space on other blogs can be a very valuable source for blog traffic.

Not everyone loved Passionfruits. One person said they had a bad experience getting the money that was owed to them and another blogger said, “Honestly, I don’t love it. Blog ads are overrated and blogging has moved from ads to sponsored content. I removed passion fruit ads a few months ago.” I understand this blogger’s perspective, but more on that another day.
Over all though, bloggers love that Passionfruit Ads make it easy for them to sell ads – which gives them more time to focus on their blog! Here are a few more:

How to sell ads on your blog
Why and how you should track traffic from ad space you purchase
Obviously, if you are going to invest money in your blog, you want it to be a benefit to you
The most common answer to this questions how much traffic did your blog get from buying ads was: I don’t know. One person added, “is it bad I don’t really monitor that? lol.” My answer: yea.
Why track your traffic from ads?
To make sure your money is being well spent. To see which blogs you purchase ads from send you the best traffic.
How to see how much traffic an ad brings to your blog.
There are 2 ways: Passionfruit Ads has statistics or you can use Google Analytics.
For a quick view of how many clicks you got per ad space you bought, sign in to your Passionfruti Ads account and click on one of your ads.
To the left is an example of what the you will see when you check your ads performance through Passionfruit. The ad cost $15.00 for 1 month. It was seen 33,154 time and clicked 39 times . That means each click cost 38 cents. You will have to be the one that decides if that is worth it or not. As for the total views, unless your ad really represents your brand and people are going to remember it, the views are insignificant.
For a more detailed report on how well the ad is working for you, use Google Analytics.
From your Google Analytics dashboard, change the dates to reflect the dates the ad was live. Next, navigate to Acquisition – All referrals. Scroll down until you see the URL the ad was located on. Here is the results for our example ad:
The ad received 28 sessions, 53.57% were new sessions, and 15 were new users. The bounce rate was 39.29% and 1 person subscribed to the blog’s newsletter based by clicking from the ad. The benefit of using Google Analytics to see how well your ads are performing is that you can see how the clicks are engaging on your blog.
Some of you may be wondering why the sessions are different from the recorded clicks from Passionfruit Ads. According to Google,
“A session is the period of time a user is actively engaged with your website, app, etc. All usage data is associated with a session”
Hopefully I’ve convinced you to track the performance of ad space you buy.
Sometimes, less is more.
I know you’re all super excited to go and sell tons of ad space and make $2,000 a month! A word of caution though: sometimes less is more. I know you’re tempted to sell so many ad spots that your ads go longer than any of your posts. But, think like a reader. Will that appeal to them? Will that distract them? Will it be beneficial for your blog? Also, it’s okay to deny sponsors as well. You should provide relevant ads to your readers. They’ll be happy and your sponsors will probably get more clicks.
